Best free and trial voice AI: try before you pay

Almost every voice-AI platform will let you try it without paying. The catch is that “free” hides four very different deals, and picking the wrong one wastes a weekend. A free tier is a plan you keep using each month inside its limits. A trial runs for a fixed window, usually 14 days, then stops. A credit is a one-off pot of money or minutes that does not refresh. And a couple of the building blocks are open source, free to run on your own machine forever. Which one you want depends on whether you are kicking the tyres for an afternoon or building something you will keep.

So before you hand over a card, here is the honest shortlist. For ongoing, no-card testing, the most generous free tiers are Speechmatics (3,000 speech-to-text minutes a month, or 50 hours), LiveKit (1,000 agent minutes a month) and Deepgram ($200 of credit that never expires). To try a turnkey phone agent, Bland’s free Start plan skips the card. (Frontdesk, which offered 20 free minutes a month back when it was called My AI Front Desk, withdrew its free tier in July 2026; it now runs a 7-day trial instead.) Every free tier and trial, side by side

We read each platform’s live pricing or signup page on 2026-06-16 and put what is actually free into one table: how much you get, whether it is a perpetual tier or a one-off, whether a card is required, and whether you are allowed to use the output commercially. The “try free” links go straight to the platform.

The vendors not in that table are the ones with no free option at all: OpenAI’s Realtime API is pure pay-per-token, and PolyAI, Sierra and Cognigy are quote-only enterprise products you can only get to through a sales demo.

The catch nobody puts in the headline: commercial use

This is the trap that costs people real money. A free tier that sounds generous is often licensed for personal testing only, which means you cannot legally put the audio in a product, a paid video or a client’s phone line. On the voice (text-to-speech) side it is the norm rather than the exception: ElevenLabs, Cartesia, Murf and Hume all withhold a commercial licence on their free tiers, and most also require attribution. ElevenLabs unlocks commercial use at its Starter plan ($6 a month), Hume at Creator ($14 a month).

The speech-to-text engines and the developer credits are friendlier here. Deepgram’s $200, AssemblyAI’s $50 and LiveKit’s free minutes are standard pay-as-you-go terms you can build on. The rule of thumb: a free voice you will publish almost always needs a paid tier, while a free engine you are wiring into your own stack usually does not. When in doubt, the licence is in the terms, and it is worth the two minutes to read it before you ship.

No single free tier wins for everyone, because the jobs are different. Here is where to start for each.

What it costs once the free runs out

The point of a free tier is to try before you commit, so it is worth knowing what “commit” costs. Free minutes run out, trials end, and credits empty, and then you are on the paid rate. For the turnkey phone platforms that lands roughly where the rest of our pricing work puts them: Bland about $0.11 to $0.14 a minute all-in, Vapi from $0.05, Retell about $0.07 to $0.31, ElevenLabs about $0.08 to $0.25 for an agent. The building blocks are cheaper per unit because you are buying one piece: Deepgram from about $0.08 a minute, Speechmatics from a fraction of a cent for transcription.

The honest bottom line

Free is a genuinely good way to choose a voice-AI platform, as long as you match the deal to the job. Want to keep testing for weeks without a card? Start with a perpetual free tier (Speechmatics, LiveKit, Bland). Building something you will ship? Check the commercial-use line before you fall for a free voice you cannot legally use. Just want a quick end-to-end run? A credit (Deepgram, Vapi, Retell) is plenty. And if you are technical and patient, Pipecat is free forever to self-host. Try two or three against your real script, watch where the free allowance runs out, and only then reach for the card.
